I am not the most politically aware person in my country, but today, after watching Q'orianka Kilcher talk about what is happening in Bagua (Amazon region in Peru) all the way from LA, I feel I should make this public.
Again, I don't know much about my country, and the information I'm posting is extracted from BBC News:
"In October 2007, President Alan Garcia published a series of articles trying to explain what he saw as the main cause of poverty. He called it the Dog in the Manger syndrome. Mr Garcia argued that communally owed land in many Peruvian communities led to an inefficient use of natural resources because it was a free resource open to everybody. Soon afterwards, Congress allowed President Garcia to issue decrees encouraging oil and gas extraction, commercial forestry, and large-scale agriculture in the Amazon. Indigenous groups see those decrees as threatening their ancestral lands and way of life."
"There have been fuel and transport blockades in Peru's Amazon region for almost two months."
"Earlier this month, Peru's military was authorised to give support to police in the escalating dispute."
"Deadly clashes in the Amazon (more and more deaths everyday)"
For Q'Orianka Kilcher's small summary of what's going on in Bagua right now, watch the video (less than 4 minutes long):

Hey Noor! Thanks for posting the Avaaz petition here as well, I already signed . Well, the situation wasn't so pleasant yesterday. In many cities there were peaceful protests defending the rights of the people in Bagua, which I think was great. However, in Lima the march wanted to walk down to the Congress (I wanted to go! But I had an exam at 3 pm Sometimes I'm too responsible, lol). Well, the police ended up throwing tear bombs at them, which is usually what the government does when the protests seem to be big... 6 students from my university were held by them, they're trying to get their names! Also, actress Q'Orianka Kilcher arrived yesterday to protest against the issue as well. She's half Quechua by the way, her dad is from Peru. So I was really glad someone was taking notice of this all the way from the US! However, I've seen some comments in Peruvian newspapers (online ones where you're allowed to comment), and they are totally xenophobic. I'm apalled, I really can't believe people can be like this. They are saying she shouldn't be here, that it's non of her business... Seriously, can people be so ungrateful? I don't know, when I know more about all this I'll let you know! I'll try to make a small summary of what's happened and why it's happened, too!
