I have been thinking about this lately, and am wondering what responce this question will get.
In your society or religion, are there certain 'untouchables' that do work no one else will do? If so, why is that? What makes them an 'untouchable'?

Well, in ancient times, an untouchable was usually the outcasts of society, and did jobs no one else would do. They were also treated with much disrespect.

Hmm, I think we have something like the untouchables in Peru. Of course, I would need to explore this a bit more, because people consider some jobs worthless while others are able to survive due to them, such as cleaning the streets and stuff. But others don't treat these workers with disrespect... I think! However, there is an unofficial caste system that we inherited from our times as a Spanish colony. It's not so visible now, but people still relate their racial origins with their socioeconomic background .

I think there are still untouchables in many societies but not as extreme as it used to.. It has mellowed down like most things have.. But there are certainely people that don't get (fully) excepted by society.. There are people that have more trouble finding a job, because people won't hire them.. For all sorts of reasons.. There are still people who don't have a fair (enough) chance to make it.. At my college we discussed this today in my Psychology class.. It has to do with the images that we have at the first split second we see someone new.. The images we have been bombarded with by the media etc.. The roles we all have to fit.. There's actually a commercial on television of a guy who has all the right credentials, is smart enough but has to change his name (from a foreign name to a typical dutch name) to get a fair chance(that isn't to say it only happends with foreigners, all kinds of people are judged when they differ from what's "normal") .. It still happends.. And it's human to make assumptions when you meet someone, for centuries we needed it to survive but right now people need to become more aware of how they see others, and how they treat them because of that.. Because the way you treat people is most likely the way they're going to act.. Anyways my point is: Yes there are people in my society that could be considered untouchables.. People with certain jobs that are frowned upon.. It just doesn't happen as rigorous as it used to be..

WE HAVE IT!!!!!:-(
The rural society in our country still is infected with "untouchability"
India has caste groups where certain groups are considered untouchables, deprived from many basic rights!!!!
they can't use the well, they can't wear certain cloth, can't touch the vessels of the village etc....
I say this with a heavy heart, Still a lot of worse cases had been taking place with no one to question!!! Some people are considered and treated inferior to animals....!!

Some people are considered and treated inferior to animals....!! Wow, that's terrible! So that leads to another question: What can we personally do to stop it? How can we treat others who don't want to be treated that way?
