As we approach the holiday season some places around the world, some of us will be buying each other lots of gifts. I myself got 5 gifts today (some candy, chocolate, a book, and a band). What do you guys think of having too much, when some people have nothing? What can we do?

For some people the only way to feel the holidays is through gifts and new things! you tell my little brother he is not getting new clothes, a toy, candy and money and he'll tell you to get lost coz Eid is all about these things to him but for adults we can be less materialistic but Well, you can't tell people not get you gifts but you can ask for things you really need instead of getting anything others bring which might be a waste of their money ... and there is always the Idea of sharing and giving others who are less fortunate some of what you have......

I watched the Grinch last night and I think the holiday materialism is what this movie is about.. Some of the Who's believed that just because the Grinch stole all their presents and decorations Christmas was ruined and stolen. But this little girl and her dad showed it wasn't like that and that christmas is about family and friends and about having each other. Christmas is all about hope and having a break from your every day life, right now people see it as a chance to indulge just one time a year.. And I think they just lost sight on what's important.. I mean there's nothing wrong with indulging just once a year and maybe we need that but in a lot of families it gets out of hand and they spend fortunes on gifts, half of it won't be used for longer than a couple of moments..
In my family we give each other small presents to show each other we care and we give something we know the other will like or need.. Afterall christmas is also about giving.. We may a little more and more luxerious than other days but our christmas excist out of visiting family members and friends..
My point is that it's ok to indulge during the holiday season but now a days people tend to overindulge. And it starts with the parents, don't buy hundreds of toys for your children, it's ok to buy each other gifts and to let children believe in Santa because christmas is about showing that you care, it's about family and friends and it's about hope but when you give children hundreds of toys, they will lose sight of christmas is really about.. and in my opinion the christmas spirit is far more precious than anything else...

as the song says 'we are living in a material world' I guess it's true.. and about 'gifts' of course kids think christmas, Eid, and any other kind of celebration, because that's all they see in it, and when they grow up, then they understand what it's about! so we shouldn't compare between kids and adults when it comes to that, we should copmare between adults themselves, because they're the ones who should not care so much about these things. and sharing gifts is good every once and awhile, it's fun and it brings people closer! but we should just keep it simple and not go too far with the gifts thing!

It's also the parents who should teach the real values of christmas Oh p.s I thought the girl was called something like Cindy Lou who or something like that..

I agree with Huda & Jen, too. Afterall it's parents that teach the real value of Christmas (it's all their fault! Kidding ). For us that have already been taught this materialist value, gifts remain a tradition but of course, we should stay simple!

I found this while I was reading a story on the internet (the story is called Striped Socks and Deep Thinking and can be found on fanfiction.net, chapter 23 (it;s about Bones) )
this is what I meant only in the form of a story..

Everything is good if it remains in equilibrium. Our parents worked hard to give us nice presents and that's OK and we must be grateful to them I remember a study i made with my dad it's kinda funny. People were told Why do you buy christmas presents to others? And they answered because of the xmas spirit they felt happy to give presents to others. Research carried through the xmas season revealed the reason to be "social pressure" and the least of the least reasons was what everyone said.
