When it comes to marriage , the father's approval is still looked for but if a woman is old enough and she wants to be married she can do so.... Marriage is a contract so it must be announced and witnessed by 4 men at least... and in Islam a bride price must be paid no matter how little it was and it is not paid to the bride's family but the bride her self as a sign of honoring her and helping her to get ready for the marriage ... there is also a stated amount of money that the man and woman agree on b4 the marriage occurs , this amount is paid if the couple divorced to help the woman go on in her life after the departure ... this amount of money also gets a man to think thrice b4 they agree on a divorce this is what I can think of at the moment ,I'll get u Zach some more when I remember

but why were those people killed?? AL Hussein and his family members were killed after a battle called the battle of Karbala in 61 Islamic calendar.. there was a man called Muaya and his son yazeed . Muayea moved the capital of the Muslim state from Madinah ( now located in Saudia Arabia) to Damascus the current capital of Syria he also wanted his son Yazeed to lead Muslims after his death . this decision of his was faced with disapproval by so many including the people of Iraq and Al Hijaz ... they felt that Al Hussein was entitled of leading Muslims because of his relation to the late Prophet and because of the fact that Yazeed did not have the qualities of a leader .... and so people in Iraq called upon AL Hussein to come to Iraq in order to promise him of obedience and leadership.. it is said that some one warned Al Hussein of going there because they knew of some treachery ;however he had gone there and was killed as Huda explained.... I'll try to provide you of more detailed information on the topic and if u have any further questions I am glad to answer Waed

ok so Ramadan is coming! I thought I'd post about that here, It's maybe on the 13th or 14th of Sep. we don't know yet! Now Ramadan is a month in the Islamic calendar! We fast the whole month! It is the most blessed month!! Prayers, fasting, charity, and self-accountability are especially stressed at this time; religious observances associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month. Now, we pray every day and we should do all of that whenever we can but in Ramadan those things, Allah rewards us more if we do them in Ramadan!! Now from dawn (which should be when the (moathen: the one who calls for prayer) ) til after the sun sets! which is another time for prayer! so during that time we don't eat anything at all! and we try to avoid "gossip"! and we read the Quran more! and anything good! Now we fast to feel poor people who don't have anything to eat! and we fast to feel how we are blessed! that we have food! and to appreciate every thing Allah blessed us with! I just want to make it clear that it's not compulsory for all of us muslims, like people who are ill, or they're too weak, or any other obstacles.
Now, you can ask about anything, and feel free as usual to share any cmment you have on this.

Well , the things that Huda mentioned like the prayers, charity and no gossips should be there all around the year not only in Ramadan but sadly ppl lately have developed a habit of doing good things in this holy month only !! A Muslim can be excused for not fasting in some cases : 1- sickness as Huda mentioned 2- traveling for very long distances 3- breast feeding in the case of mothers 4- during a woman's menstrual cycle however one has to fast those days later after Ramadan is finished but those who can't do that have to pay a certain amount of money for each day he or she didn't fast and the money has to go to the poor and needy ones of course Sorry to butt in Huda

Today is 29th of Shaban which is the month that precedes Ramadan In the Lunar Calender , the Islamic one... now today in all Muslims countries the moon will be observed to see whether tomorrow is the first of Ramadan or the 30th of Shaban! Ramadan is not a celebration . It is more of a holy month as we believe that Allah ((GOD)) revealed Qura'an (( our holy book)) to prophet Muhammad PBUH during this month...Fasting or " Sawm" is one of the five pillars or duties of Islam To us Ramadan is a month in which we fast from dawn until sunset ,both are times of prayer for Muslims... By fasting no food, drinking, smoking or sex is allowed... At sunset the fast is broken with a meal known as Iftar.... The whole month is meant for the betterment of our stamina and self control, to strengthen compassion between people... because when u prevent ursefl from all luxuries and such u can feel how it is like to have nothing of this not because u r performing a religious spiritual ritual but because u have nothing to eat or drink!! It also strengthens ur bonds with God because when u get ur mind off all the other things u r able to communicate with God better because ur mind can't be distracted!! God even encourages us to be near him this month by rewarding us more for the good deeds we do.... Ramadan is a month of compassion , holiness, charity and God.... All Muslims from all around the word await this month and look forward to it each year! At the end of the month comes Eid!! In Eid ur life gets back to normal , ie: u can eat whenever u want .. People celebrate Eid Al Fitr at the end of the Ramadan ..,Fitr means break fast ;D ... My siblings esp the youngest 2 r really excited they even put a star and a crescent on the window and made lanterns and stuff for their classes ;D Hope this explained it to u Zach and for further information u can always ask me and Huda Ramadan Mubarak in advance

It's the last day of Eid.. Let me tell you how muslims celebrate it.. at first they pray Eid prayer at the early morning.. and then they go and visit their relatives and friends.. and old people give kids money.. we only got from dad, because we're not considered kids.. :/ and they go playing (kids I mean) if we were in Iraq, we'd spend the first day at our grandpa's house, but because we don't have relatives here, so we just visit friends... At the first day, we didn't go out.. we stayed in Nizwa.. and on the 2nd day of Eid, we went to Muscat and then we're back at the 3rd day in Nizwa.. if you have any questions,, do ask
