Hi guys, I am so sure that most of us our members of any of the most popular social networking sites such as: MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Bebo, Hi5, Multiply, TakingItGlobal, and so on. I think, one way or the other, these sites help us communicate with other people. The space is provided for us to have an inter-cultural and inter-generational dialogue. We cross the boundaries of time and space when we participate actively and involve ourselves in the discussions, campaigns and advocacies. Somehow, through SNSs, we kind of promote tolerance and diversity since almost always, membership is free and almost for all.
However, are you guys familiar with "aSmallWorld"? This site is actually very exclusive, only for European jetsetters and the social elites. Membership is "by invitation only" and even if one of your friends is part of that small world and you receive an invitation, there will be a kind of "probationary period" to see how authentic and worthy you are to belong to the group. If they find out that you are not worthy you will be automatically "transposed" from "aSmallWorld" to "aBiggerWorld" and your computer screen will change its color.
This reminds me of Adolf Knigge's "On Intercourse with People". He said, "They regard themselves as beings of a superior kind, privilege by Nature to reign and to rule, while the lower orders are destined to pay homage to their egotism and their vanity, to bear with their whims, and to flatter their fancies." He continued, "...Do not help them to forget that whatever they are and have, it is the people's consent to which they owe these privileges, and that they may be divested of them if they abuse them."
I just find it very interesting. I really don't have problems with the elites, considering that they (most of them) have not evolved in terms of relationship with people. The last princess that I wanted to emulate when I was a toddler was Princess Diana. But I'd rather feed the poor than belch myself with the most expensive food and wines. I'd rather travel to learn different cultures than to emphasize my luxurious lifestyle. But that's just me.
