But nuclear is one of the powers that we can use to get away from oil.

"Best" is highly argumentative. Everything has it's own pros and cons that don't measure directly across and so what some think are best, other's might not.

Ok you think the nuclear power can solve the problem ,I don't... It's your opinion and it's mine so how was you rday?

You are trying to convince me that nuclear power can be a good solution, I cannot change my opinion, because I think that alternative sources of energy are better. That's not a discussion my friend. That's arguing.... sorry..

Well, maybe I can join this debate. According to Greenpeace, nuclear power is inherently dangerous for 3 reasons: -Safety -Waste products -Weapons proliferation Safety is obvious because no nuclear power plant in the world is absolutely safe. Not only due to flaws inside the plants, but because there are risks of sabotage, maybe a transport accident nearby that could collide with the plant, etc. For me the most obvious con is that nuclear power releases waste products, uranium being the most commonly known one. In the long-term, radioactive substances released by nuclear power can dramatically change the Earth's biosphere... in a negative way. Third option can increase the risk of wars, living under constant tensions due to international disputes (eg: Cuban missile crisis), etc. So yesh, I'm against nuclear power .

I think that the alternatives are better, too. But I think that nuclear is a good option and certianly better than oil and coal. I don't think the discussion has been exhuasted, there is still a lot more info that can be put on the table, even though we disagree. We each have our reasons for why we think our ways and we debate those reasons. This kind of discussion should never end, so long as it doesn't degrade to argueing (it would work alot better if others join in), and it doesn't seem to have, everything is still civil.

I'm proud to be from a country where nuclear weapons are banned, and nuclear power is not used. New Zealand lost its military alliance with the U.S. because we didn't let American ships carrying nuclear arms into our waters. That's bullying for ya.
Nuclear power is debatable. I don't know enough about it to have a strong opinion. However, there are inarguably problems associated with both nuclear power and solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. As I see it:
Nuclear: Very small chance of extreme damage if not managed properly, but relatively clean apart from waste product.
Wind: Very expensive for the amount of power it produces. Wind power alone cannot sufficiently or realistically provide power to large cities. Eco-friendly, but somewhat of an eye-sore.
Hydro-electric: Provides a large amount of my country's power. While it is relatively eco-friendly, it is very unreliable. As I speak, New Zealand is suffering blackouts due to low water levels in our hydro-electric dams.
Solar: A fairly good source of power in some areas, but expensive to install and maintain. Hopefully technological developments will increase power output of solar panels. Very eco-friendly.
I don't support Nuclear power in NZ because we rely on Tourism as our main source of income. I think the loss in tourism revenue would be larger than the increased costs associated with cleaner energy.

Wow, very interesting post. I never thought of nuclear power concerning the tourism industry. Nice post!

Great Matt! Same opinion.... Greece has no nuclear factory... although... the problem is that our current Minister of Public Building and "environment" wants to build a nuclear station and called the nuclear power "Green source of energy".... Stavros Dimas, the European Commisioner for Environment, said that Nuclear Energy cannot be named as "green energy" and will not allow any kind of Nuclear Station in Greece.
And there is a "war" between those two politicians...... anyway... According to Greenpeace, the nuclear energy is not a reliable source of energy and of course not cheap, because in order to produce energy from a nuclear station, you have to consume a great ammount of energy... for not only to run the station, but also to take care of it ,in order not to be dangerous for humans...
Btw... did u hear what happened in France?.... The Water of a river was polluted by nuclear waste.... Water used in agriculture and water "appropriate" to drink it!

Great thread, I didn't know that much about the issue with nuclear power and wanted to see what people think so this was a perfect thread to see peoples views and thoughts on such a current important debate.
